Docking is easy, even in a space cow or anaconda, so I don't see the need for a DC

Agreed, as long as you don't have a sidewinder or cobra deciding to try to boost through while you are in the letterbox in the spacecow! Does the DC take traffic into account?

Hehe, Im not so sure. Have you seen some of the landing attempts from new pilots? They are range from 1m/s crawls to suicidal.

That's the fun part in the station....sitting on your pad watching the fireworks...

Clang Clang Clang.....screech....POP.....goes another....:p

I just started playing in a SW. Docking is the most fun part at the moment :)

It's basically looping inverted as you round the station to cut in right at the edge of the cow gate, down throttle+up thrust to 'oversteer' the rear end and line up, full boost through the slot, as I'm pointing straight for a moment I glance right (I play in VR so it's an actual head movement) as I'm going through, lower my gear, look ahead and find my number, aim at the floor and gun the throttle. As I'm about to hit the deck I full reverse throttle, nose up and thrust down. Lightly slap my belly on the deck, incur some minor shield damage and docked!

At this stage of the game my cargo is basically all of my money as well. Also, always 100% ENG and no pips in shields.

Very fun :D

Taking off is also fun, gear up the instant I'm un-docked and then full speed straight at the slot. I think this is where I'm most likely to actually die one day as I'm invariably coming in at an angle and often as I level out right at the inside lip I'm carrying upwards momentum which my down thrust isn't countering enough. I put some paint on one of them, im sure.

A bit of me thinks it might actually be best to just pimp out the SW as I'm inevitably going to blow up any other bigger ship in short order.

One thing that has me thinking. What is the point of going underground in the dock? I didn't really look to see what was different but I'm assuming something is.

Docking really isn't that hard once you have mastered it. It's part of the process of learning to fly IMO - won't have one, will never have one. And sorry that FD introduced one. To me it is a concession to today's attitude of - gimme now, I beat you, It's too hard I give up mentality.

yes but its a choice, YOU do not have to have one and your selfish atitude saying others shouldnt have one either is out of order.

You're right there is no real point, but it's fun at least once and it also lets me make a coffee or read a couple of emails whilst it docks for me.

The great thing is, it's a choice, you don't have to buy it, so no harm done. Although I wish they'd make it a bit faster and not fly at an impossible angle, maybe next beta :)

Docking Computer Totally Worth It

I fitted one with the intention of trying it out once and then selling it. However as auto docking began, a familiar piece of music began to play quietly at first... Blue Danube! The memories came flooding back!
Needless to say i'm keeping the docking computer...

The docking computer will be most convenient - not because I cannot dock manually, but it will give me the option to switch it on and then I can go to the loo, or make a cuppa, or grab a beer. That's how I intend to use it :D

Blue Danube to docking at a rotating letterbox is pretty much a signature feature of Elite, having been in all versions.

It's a tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3oHmVhviO8

apart from the BBC/electron versions as the game was so packed in the only sound was minimal to docking/undocking, shooting/being shot, crashing and the occasional blips.

The whole 2001 space odyssey is a huge mistake as well, when a movie is put together the music is the last thing to be made. So while it is being recorded the director puts in placeholder music to get a "feel" for the movie and to get the editing process started.

When the music was ready, Kubric was so used to blue danube, strauss etc he just junked the original score and kept the placeholder and the poor composer went to the premiere just to see months of work wasted.

Anyways after half a dozen uses I have turned the DC module off and I am debating on keeping in the ship for when I can't be bothered or to sell it and reduce my weight for longer hyperspce jumps.

The docking computer was an absolute must for me in the original Elite, I sucked at manual docking. But surprisingly docking in Elite Dangerous is fairly easy. However, like many of you, I will be getting it out of nostalgia :)

Main application I can see for the docking computer is the ability to get within range, switch it on, then go make a cuppa or grab a cold drink from the fridge, perhaps take another bite of your sandwich, or a bit of choccy, perhaps some crisps. And if you need the loo - this is the perfect time and game mechanic to make it all a bit more convenient.

Anyway, I see it as providing a nice little interlude to do such things. And it only breaks the 'immersion' if you choose to do so - so a nice option to have IMHO.

The big question is, does it play the Blue Danube while you are docking?

I wish we had that play as soon as docking request has been granted with or without docking computer...

Although I tried once docking with the flight assist off once... very tricky... I think I need a better HOTAS controller for that, with a 3 DOF stick just for Thrusters....

Going Underground

Only in the underground hangars are the facilities to install and remove equipment. When you select Outfitting from the station menu, you will automatically be move into the hangar.

Much as I love to sit upstairs and watch the world go by, when people are crashing - or being blown to bits due to their transgressions - sometimes it gets really loud. Especially if a big ship explodes. Immersive, no doubt, but particularly distracting if I'm trying to update my trading spreadsheet or consider my next move.

At times like that I like to go underground for a bit of peace and quiet.

On the subject of docking computers, without an external view it's not often I get to indulge my sense of wonder at the ED universe (always flying here and there, doing stuff) so parking a way off and letting the DC do the work gives me the chance to have a look around. When it's not got me vibrating uselessly a few yards from the station wall, that is.
