Since the recent update the Auto Dock is flawless, i never had an issue with the old Docking Computer either other than it was very slow. Wouldn't be without it, breaks up the grinding trade runs, i can nip onto the forums while my ship docks :)

Docking is the best part of the game. Why would you want a docking computer to take all the fun away?

Seems odd to me too but there are a lot of people who seem to play semi-afk and from what I here the DC has gotten quite good.

So Is a docking computer to be fair

I like to docking computer because its part of the game - true in the original elite you used to buy a docking computer cos real life docking was so hard and this version is far easier, I use the docking computer probably for four reasons in no order of preference

1. The blue Danube
2. I like the occasional look around
3. I can take a quick break from the game while still playing
4. The Docking computer is a damned sight better than me in a big ship without shields

in 1.2 I used the docking computer mainly because of point 4 as I would run shieldless, however as SJ has also buffed up the AI NPCs running shieldless is a bit silly now. which sort of means there is less need to a DC as Ill have shields anyway.

Docking computer also now rotates you around stations / outposts to face the correct side for docking.....saves a LOT of time if you're approaching an outpost and your dock is one of those 'upside down , facing vertically on the opposite side' ones.

.
This above is why I got the DC, got so sick and tired of flying around an outpost trying to find the pad lol. Actually I tell a lie, that is the second reason I got it, the first was to hear the Blue Danube, bought back so many memories on 1984!
.
Just remember you don't have to engage the DC, you can still land manually if you wish. I still do that at Coriolis stations but then engage DC to put me on the pad once inside, saves any bingles.

Meh the auto dock is too slow for me. Personally i'd love an auto computer that slows down automatically and drops me 10k from my target.

Guess to use or not to use is pretty much like the same as driving a car with manual or automatic gearbox. I find automatic gearboxes boring, others like it because its chilled driving. Though in FD another point for me, besides the "its boring part" it uses up a precious compartment, and i can't think of a module that i wouldn't deem more useful. To each his or her own i guess.

The DC is great fun. Just bought a T7 and fitted it. However I wouldn't even think of compromising the loadouts of any other ship in my small fleet to fit one. Docking is fun, but somehow the DC seems appropriate for a pure trader. :)

Don't make it too quick! Won't have time to nip to the loo or go get a drink or check the forums lol.

Yes, I agree with this. I've mentioned it before but I'd really like to see two docking computer settings. Something like:

a) Engage docking computer
b) Engage docking computer (scenic)

Option 'A' engages the docking computer in the normal speedy efficient way.

Option B engages the docking computer but plays the Blue Danube music in it's entirety and times the docking to complete, just as the music comes to an end.

To me, docking and the Blue Danube is iconic; and sometimes you just want to sit back and enjoy the majesty and beauty of this fabulous game (and also perhaps allowing time to fetch a cold glass of beer!)

You can get option B now. Just drop your landing gear before engaging the docking computer.

Does it have time to play the whole of the 'Blue Danube' music?

How much of the piece you get depends how far out you are when you engage the DC. However, as the complete Blue Danube waltz is more than ten minutes long I doubt you'd get the whole thing even if there is a queue for the slot.

Some people will say that using the docking computer just makes the game easier, I still manually dock occasionally to keep in a skill level and I just lost my docking computer to heat damage

The docking computer is a tool and a useful one at that and well worth its minimal cost - A take off computer would be ace!

I'm sure if my memory serves me correctly the original Elite on the Amiga did both docking and launch maybe that will come in a future update. As for others saying it is lazy and quicker to dock manually, so be it, but this is the way I like to play and it saves time trying to find the letterbox and where the hell that landing pad is on outposts.

Ugh. Have never used one. Horrible things. Its just leeching power/cargo/whatever space.

Never cared for the 'Blue Danube', not now, not in 1984.

To each his own - if it works for you, great!

I used it once just to listen to the iconic music, then immediately sold the module and I'll never use it again, manually docking is far far too easy for me to waste a module slot on it.

..perhaps if docking was as hard as the BBC Model B version I'd consider it but never as it is right now.

mmmm well i just about lost the farm tonight
had 3m in combat bounties in my vulture

approached an outpost and though i'll let the DC take it in

It turned and flew straight down at the pad (like it was a letterbox)
I pulled away at the last second at 90 m/s
let it do it a second and third time

yup ... thats bugged its a platform not a letterbox to fly through

I was at Timberalis at one of the outposts

I agree the letterbox docking is much better but the smaller stations turn it off
