Gotta say I just tried the docking computer in a Type 6 and I hadn't watched the video before trying it. Holy cow! Talk about having my heart in my mouth.

I was quickly looking around to work out how to exit the auto dock just incase. Still, it hasn't killed me yet in two goes. I'm still not confident though - it throws the ship about like a madman.:(

I tried it in the first beta1 release and sold it after first use, was in a sidey though.
Now in beta 1.03 and a Type 6 Lacon, bought it again and it brought a huge smile to my face when the Blue Danube played...thank you FD:D

Find it best to get lined up on the port 8k away and then engage it. That eliminated the corkscrewing ballerina effect.

Yes I can dock without it, but it is useful when you need a "comfort break" and it hasn't crashed it yet. Though I have taken control back when it was taking a while crabbing to the pad.
:D

Hi there,
Would be interested to find out other folks experience of the docking computer. Bought one and was sorely disappointed at it's performance. It jitters all over the place trying to get aligned and not once has it actually landed on the pad.

Every single time it hovers over the pad and then messages up telling me to get aligned. Not remotely impressed with it at all. I was hoping it would save me time like it did in the original game (84) where you activated it and boom, you were in, landed and ready to trade.

Sold the damn thing and went back to manually landing. I could do it a lot faster than the hunkajunk piece of kit.

Anyone else frustrated by it's total inability to land?

Yeah, to be fair it is kinda awful. But it is it's first appearance, in a beta.
I'm sure FD will get it right.

Many problems with AI of docking computer. frequent near misses perhaps a distance bubble around each ship using the computer could ensure they grant enough space to other players and npc's.
Also the direction of travel seems quite random and messed up, sometimes they reverse, frequently travel sideways and they jitter about a lot even when no other ships are near.

Edited I have noticed that the DC will often get the ship to above its landing pad then sit there like the ship has DT's shaking and shivering. With time ticking away it can be alarming. I think I have a workaround though, pressing control alt delete seems to kick start it to land 9 times out of 10 and the tenth time closing Ctrl Alt Del box then reopening seems to fix it.

Docking computer has a bit of HAL 9000 in there. :p

"Land in the docking bay please, HAL."

"I'm sorry Dave. I can't do that."

I'll be giving the autodocking a miss as well. It doesn't even shift over to one side to let other ships pass through the docking port.

I'll continue with what I'm doing at the moment, humming the Blue Danue as I'm entering the station.

got a gate warning yesterday while using the docking computer and somehow the computer wanted to fly out again and crashed onto the upper side of the gate and left me with 17% hull. I instantly switched it for a chaff launcher.

fracking docking computer

anyone else been totalled whilst the docking computer splashes you into the space station>?

note to self always follow the old addage .... keep at least 50% of your credit and never spend it al on cargo .. ahh well back to a sidewinder i go

Suggestion on docking computer for Dev.

I like the music and docking sequence. Reminds me of the old games. However it is just too slow and dangerous to use.

Can I suggest that there are two different types of docking computers.

Type 1: What you have now.

Type 2: When you get to within 3KM of the docking gate, you bring your ship to a complete stop.

The space station then talks to your docking computer to get exact mass, size and shape of the ship. It generates a witch space inhibitor around the docking bay matching the ship exactly.

A confinement beam is shot at the ship requesting docking. The space station is then able to drop the ship to witch space for a millisecond along the confinement beam and into the landing dock.

Have it that if the Docking Computer II is damaged (<50% damage) it causes hull/system/cargo damage. If over >50% damaged then it does not at all.

Currently about as smart as a concussed labrador with a roller-skate on one leg trying to chase its own tail. It can only get better.

I've seen some downright scary maneuvers by the AI. Watched one eagle go in sideways then roll and come out backwads the way he came only to full thrust back in right on top of me. I jinked out of the way w/ my Hauler and continued out, he exploded seconds later behind me having rammed into God-knows-what

I always see Cobras just fixed in place at some weird angle inside the dock with thrusters pulsing. I'm paranoid they'll flip out and explodinate my ship so I give them a wide birth.

Anaconda's on the other hand be all like "Hey hot stuff, check this out!" then they proceed to dance the dance of seduction for me  Not sure how I feel about their nose-down thruster gyrations.. at least they haven't invited me to their shield-grinding ménage à trois...
