The Docking Computer thread.

You could probably build a number of commands for the amount of thrust you need. Either playing with the prefix/suffix, or just making a bunch of them for half second, one second, two second, etc. Another option is to have it begin a thrust every second, and have another command stop that command. Lots of different ways to approach it. Just make sure your pips are full on systems, so any mistakes lead to just a bounce, not an explosion.
Docking computer is not really worth it.

That said, I used it once and then got rid of it. Docking is not difficult, at least I don't find it so. Not tried to dock the biggest ship in the game yet though so maybe then it's more of a challenge.
Also, using the comp is SO SLOW! After a few minutes of it messing about trying to line up my already lined up ship, I decided to take over myself or I was going to die of old age before I landed!

Agree your points, I have since removed mine, although loved the rendition of Blue Danube.
I tended to use the docking computer so I could go get a drink and take a comfort break. Luckily I suffered no ill effects (like trying to land through the station walls, or fighting with AI ships while going through the port)

A good way to make the docking computer worth while, would be to have the option of dropping-in a few mp3's of your favourite tracks to listen to whilst docking (as much as I love The Blue Danube). They could even offer a more expensive model that allows the option of extending the Auto-pilot sequence so it can fly your ship between two Stations, jumps 'n' all. That way you can sit with your feet up on the dash, cup of your favourite hot beverage and a copy of the latest GalNet News Transmission. Watch out for spillages on the Nav computer or the Auto-pilot is likely to jump you to the centre of the nearest star

Only reason I still have mine installed, otherwise I'd get seriously dehydrated, plus it can be useful when seriously inebriated. All other times I love the nervous interaction of docking myself, never gets old for me
having a docking computer in a sidewinder or even a cobra is like have a spare wheel on a teapot
It does tend to come into its own in the larger ships and is handy to use to take a comfort break while playing the game
It is also a basic docking computer - Others ware meant to be in the pipeline and its heavy nose down attitude while moving perpendicular seems to suggest that something isnt quite right

Knowing very little of these things, I'm inclined to think the same.
So far I've been having fun blazing in as fast as I can and seeing how quickly I can get myself down on the landing pad... and whether I'll remember to put the gear down first!!

I tried it in my Cobra a couple of weeks ago, but apart from the music it was a waste of time.
I bought one my my L9 thinking it would be more useful...
First time I left the room while docking and I dimly heard "shields down" through the wall.
After an undignified rush to the joystick I just managed to unwedge myself from the latticework around the docking port where I was jammed, and dock manually.
Ended up with hull down to 72% which cost a bit to fix but trivial compared to the loss of 2MCr cargo

Pretty much this. It means I can get rid of the funnel and all those bottles............... whaaaat?
I use the docking computer. It is buggy sure, after all the game is in beta! I have had it 'dancing' outside the station a few times and if it does this I give it 5 minutes to see if it fixes itself (it has done once or twice) and if not I take control and dock manually.
The main reason I use the docking computer: Docking inside the station. Getting in to the station is easy, getting to the bays is the problem for me. When the bay I am heading to is in the middle or near the back then I can spot it but when it's close to the entrance I have trouble finding the bay. Also, while flying towards the bay, as I pass over another I sometimes get a loitering warning! I never get that with the DC in control even though it flies over them closer than I do at times!
A major gripe with the DC: The music. It is classic Elite and a wonderful reminder to my old Elite days as well as the docking sequence to 2001: A Space Odyssey. But, in these days of powerful multitasking PCs I often like to listen to my own music while playing games. The docking music ignores the music settings of the game! Listening to 2 songs at the same time is rather annoying :/

my docking computer didnt work
so after i bought it for 4500 cr and requested the docking , it crashed right into the station and destroyed my ship and so it destroyed itself. maybe i got a HAL 9000 or the bomb-computer from darkstar, at least : it sucked and the programmer of this should take some refresh.....

I've wondered this repeatedly. I imagine it's discussed somewhere in the 76 preceding pages but I'm not sure I have the energy (certainly not the time) to trawl through them.

Yeah, coz the current AI system is placeholder and pretty terrible and the DC uses the AI system to land.
As AI improves so will the DC.
