The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Thanks for this list, it's something to look at when you're not sure where to head next. I've just started my 2nd exploration trip yesterday with an intention to get to the SgtA*, but I already got distracted and I'm currently heading towards Coal Sack.

Hi Cmdrs,

I am looking for an image view of the entire galaxy map, as in the first post "galactic overview", but without the limits of the 11 maps.
I want to use it as a background image in an Excel chart to track the journeys of exploration.
Do you know if this picture exist, and where to find it?

Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure if its possible to still get a screenshot of the entire galaxy now. The one I took for the overview in the OP was taken during gamma when it was possible to zoom the in-game map all the way out and fit the whole galaxy on one screen.. but since then we can't seem to zoom out as far.

I found this one on google images but I don't think its the actual game map, although its pretty close :)

I've used that one before and assumed it was an early version or at least a mock-up. Even without the logo, it's obviously the ED galaxy but it over-emphasises the star density in the outer arms making it look like you can get a lot further along them than is possible. I prefer that to the in-game depiction where the apparent density is so low that people get to the outer edge of the Perseus arm and believe they've made it to the rim because they don't even notice the arm beyond it!

Thanks, I'll try to use this picture.

Sorry if this has been addressed somewhere, but has anyone put together a map of all the galactic "sectors" as defined by the procedural generation engine?

I don't think it has been made, but it would have to be a 3d map, since procedurally genrated sectors are cubes of 1000 Ly side, at lesat 2 fit on tue Y axis, and probaly 4 in the core region.

Update:

I've added the Age of Pioneers thread to the original post in this thread as it covers a lot of what explorers have achieved in the early days of exploration in Elite Dangerous (most of which has become part of the mapping project data).

Here are the latest entries :)

  • The Bleia Permit Zone (Bleia Regions) [map 11]
  • The Norma Southern Gate [map 10]
  • Outer White Dwarf - Neutron Ring [map 10]
  • Bleae Aescs Nebula [map 10]
  • 'Gatehouse Nebula' [map 8]
  • 'Blue Lilies Nebula' [map 10]
  • 'Six Rings for Six Stars' [map 11]

The following are very close to each other on the map so have been encompassed under one map label;

  • The Festival Grounds: a collection of nebulae on the eastern outer edge of the galactic core [map 8]
- includes the following sub-entries:

  1. 'Bonfire Nebula'
  2. 'Green Lantern Nebula'
  3. 'Wind Chime Nebula'
  4. 'Fortune Teller Nebula'
  5. 'Golden Chalice Nebula'
  6. 'Candy Floss Nebula'
  7. 'Clown Nebula'
  8. 'Thunderclap Nebula'
- thanks Edelgard von Rhein for some great descriptions on that part of the galaxy!

Hi

I mentioned this a while ago now but don't think there were any responses to it. I'm sure this has been noticed before, but there appears to be a thin band of L class stars across the majority of the Galactic Plane (possibly all across the central plane but haven't fully checked yet). The band looks to go on forever and is only about 15LY deep. I've put a YouTube link here: http://youtu.be/UgKEDL1Qlw4 so you can see what I mean (Apologies for the fairly poor quality video)

Although I only had my filter set to L type, there's also a band of T and Y Type stars mixed in with the L Types. Just seemed strange that there's this layer of the galaxy that's predominately 3 types of stars only. Anyone else spotted this?

They've been added to various maps and listed as 'badlands' - regions where travelers need to be wary of running out of fuel. The Orion Spur has a really large one that can catch pilots unawares when heading across the Vela Molecular Ridge, and the Aucocks Pocket is another - usually the first hazard encountered when heading across the Sagittarius Gap, coreward. I think you're right that the majority of the galactic plane has them so I expect more 'badlands' to be cataloged in time as explorers dip in and out of the plane and enter these L-Class star regions.

Geetings CMDR's!

Hello and much kudos to this project. :)
I am actual in the core near Sagittarius A*.
My next target is "The Upper 1st Quadrant (Map 07)". Are there really no more dircovered regions as displayed on Map 07?
'Cause then i will have a huge playfield there!
Are any known great exploration-treks out there? Or I'll be all alone?

It's one of the least visited areas but there have been a few reported trips there and, no doubt, more unreported ones. The outer rim has been mostly mapped via Svenno's "Search for the Loneliest Planet" and my own "Trips to the Galactic Limits". The only nebula I visited in the region had already been fully tagged by a couple of CMDRs. But it's a large area and I'm sure you'll find large parts of it haven't been visited by anyone.

Thanks for the very helpful answer.
Then will i go to some of the nebulae, i think.
How can i add my explorations to this community project, if i find something interesting?

If you find something visually interesting, a statistical record breaker, a map feature, or something of scientific interest then simply post a screenshot when you're there and provide its procedural name so I can pinpoint it on the map.. The idea is to find points of interest that you think other explorers may want to visit one day and to name it something a bit more imaginative than the procedural names the game has generated.

Check out some of the other posts to get an idea of what explorers have submitted.

Good luck out there :)

Remeber that if something is already tagged, but not in this map, you can happily post your discoveries here nevertheless. One thing is to pass by and scan stuff, another thing is having the vision to understand a particular region of space and the will to share it to rest of the community.

Question:
Is it normal, that I found a huge amount of Neutron-Stars and White-Dwarfs at a high of -1.000 LY?
Or is it something remarkable?
I am just in the north-western quadrant, at the start-point of the perseus-arm.

Should i make a screenshot or is this nothing special?

That's common. These are the neutron fields that you'll see people refer to and which basically form a double donut shape around the core at +/- 1,000 LY or so.

Outside the core (and the hand-crafted area around the human bubble), it's hard to find a white dwarf other than at around -1,100 LY even though they should be common throughout the galaxy.

Ah, ok...that was new to me.
Thanks a lot again CMDR. :)

I've found thousands of white dwarves in a big ring 15kly from Sag A*, along with NS, on the +1000 y axis. The ring is huge. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=173013 or described in Map 10 of this thread.
