I'd be interested to hear if anyone is successfully using the t-1600M stick and is comfortable with it.

So far, nothing is beating using the mouse for me and I have the above stick, plus an x-52. The fine controls are far superior with a mouse than a janking great lump of plastic, but maybe that's my delicate hands ;)

The t-1600M inparticular is terrible, I've calibrated, tried the target software, all sorts. Problem is it has massive deadzones and almost no fine control, especially with rolling. So I'll move the stick several mils...nothing...then suddenly very fast roll rate.
I bought the t-1600m some while ago specifically for Steel Beasts Pro tank simulator, and in that it has no such issues, pertinent given the reliance on very fine control of the X axis when tracking targets.

I'm inclined to think that at this stage joystick support needs considerable work, so I'm not so fussed, I seem to be getting on well enough with the mouse anyway.
Remove any deadzone in Elite, and set up the axis using TARGET.

Logitech extreme 3d profile

I'm a new Alpha tester and it is taking me an absolute age getting my old Cyborg 3D Gold joystick set-up the way I would prefer.

So, I thought it would be a good idea for all Alpha testers to give new testers a basic idea on what would be a good configuration for their joystick/controller.

There are currently, a few default configurations within the set-up menu but, not all joysticks are catered for.

So, anyone care to share their configurations?

I know every ones tastes are different, but with the basics provided, we can tweak to suit our own tastes.

Thanks in advance :)

Dryza.

Ive just signed up too whooo! I will have a go at setting up a profile for the logitech extreme 3d tomorrow if nobody has setone up and will see how i can share my profile.

Yeah, I bought it, I also kinda hate it. It feels really cheap (worst kind of plastic with no weight at all.. Blergh.), the buttons are genuinely terrible in a baby's-first-fake-phone way, the actual stick part only has 4 buttons + hat, which sucks) and.. Idk. While control *is* more feasible with a stick in Elite, that's just because of the flight model... The mouse still gives me way better precision, and I found that with the joystick, I *HAD* to use a gimbal weapon, else I couldn't hit squat.

Also, after using the stick for ~40 minutes, my wrist starts aching. I don't know if that's just a joystick thing, or particular to t16000's shape.. idk.

To be honest, I'm really regretting getting it. Shouldn't have bothered. I can't say I've noticed any deadzone stuff, but I have almost no previous experience with sticks as such, so I can't say whether I'm just bad at it, or if something is indeed wonky. For what it's worth, it does feel a bit that the roll ramp-up (from still into slow into fast/max roll) is a bit too sharp.

That sort of pain is usually the result of your seat height vs. the table height being wrong. Either the joystick is too high or too low in comparison to your arm and hand (your elbow should be in 90 degree angle for the best ergonomics).

Oh, and this too... I can hit stuff very well using a joystick. However, the best joystick would be a long stick like they have in actual fighter airplanes. That would give you far better precision than the short sticks that gaming joysticks usually have.

Might be. But I literally can't put the stick any lower, it's already on the desk's pullout-keyboard-tray, and *that* is already pretty much brushing my legs as-is. Elbow's at.. somewhere between 90 and 85.

What stick do you use Susimetsä? Have you been able to trim the deadzone to minimum and set up a quadratic response curve?

The pain is because Mr Mouse user hasn't trained his muscle and tendons to using a joystick. Similar to when you first start playing a musical instrument, quite painful and unnatural till your body adjusts...

I haven't bothered with specific deadzone settings etc. yet (just going with the basic setup), so it is all pretty basic with T.16000M. The reason for this is that I expect Frontier to still fine-tune the controls and I don't want to waste time doing something that I have to redo later.

Following and aiming at the enemies is still very doable. I don't hit with every shot, by any means, but then I don't expect to.

I will switch to regular weaponry over the weekend and try to take some video if I get a chance and if people want to see 40-year-old reflexes at play... :p

You're right, the buttons are poor, very poor. Those on the base are mostly unuseable because of their location, the throttle is in a bad place, and there is very limited switches on the stick itself.

Obviously the main attraction of this stick, and reason why people buy it (including myself) is the hall effect sensors which massively increase resolution and sensitivity. For the sim I bought it for the stick nails it completely, I only need a few buttons and no throttle, so it's ideal.
For Elite, or any flight sim it is a bad choice.

I've only really put about 10 hours into Elite so far but I'm beginning to think that because of the flight model a stick is really not needed at all. Keyboard and mouse feels very natural and a lot more precise, mouse control is so well implemented so far.

I'm definitely going to wait and see and not invest any money into a new hotas or other controller until post-release. This area is highly subjective and the game is still changing so it's impossible to draw any conclusions currently.

Had a bit more time to try a few things this morning.

I tried various different S curve setups and other tweaks in target and had the script run whilst playing Elite. Nothing made any difference. The X-axis has zero gradation, whereas Y (pitch) is perfect, I can change pitch rates with the stick as consistently and accurately with the stick as I can the mouse. The roll is either on or off, it is impossible to match the roll rate of the station, for example.
Both axis have huge central deadzones, no matter what I did to the slider in game, or in target.

Fearing there was an issue with the stick itself I tested it in Steel Beasts Pro, and DCS A10C, no issues at all in either.

I think this is an issue with Elite itself, joystick support seems a bit rudimentary at the moment. It would be a tad foolish to buy anything else for now, but fortunately mouse feels great to me.

The mod on my chair has been an utter delight and has cured all my arm ache issues. It has held up very well and hasn't come undone or loose once and I have been hammering it pretty hard.

The even nicer thing is that I imagine long journeys where I recline my seat and enjoy the scenery and still have the controls in the right place.

Michael
I can't see the preset for the saitek x55 rhino in the pulldown menu in the alpha? Also the Saitek x 55 is 2 usb connections but this is supported? Thanks.

So you say the x55 doesn't seem to be supported ? Can anyone confirm this ? Then why Michael woud say yes ?

Yeah the x55 is 2 USB that also why i asked..

The Thrustmaster T-16000M certainly is an interesting case. I've seen it recommended here and on the Star Citizen forums as a good affordable joystick. Mostly it seems to be recommended on the grounds of being ambidextrous and supposedly having a very good sensor. Can't really speak for it myself but it sure looks cheap even compared to other joysticks in the same price range.

Anyway. I'll be picking up my Logitech Extreme 3D pro later today. I haven't really played anything with a joystick in quite a while. Any recommendation for some good games to play to get used to a joystick? Only in premium beta so not going to be able to try it out with Elite (unless the part of my brain that goes "Oh come one, let's just upgrade to alpha, it'll be fun" wins out over the part that goes "Yea, no, that's a lot of money to spend at this point, alpha is soon over"). If it controls similar to Elite, great, if not, doesn't matter. Don't care if I control a spaceship or an air plane but I'm not particularly interested in a full on flight simulator.

I have an Extreme 3D Pro, and Oolite uses it rather well.

I get that a lefty might be interested in the T-16000M, and maybe someone on a really tight budget, but it's an aweful stick. As someone else mentioned, the buttons look like something you'd find on a toy aimed at a 2 year old. I've got a 15 year old stick (that only cost me £30 even then) that looks more expensive!

I definitely plan on getting the Saitek X55, so certainly interested to see the response to whether it actually is supported. In other threads people that have tried to use it in Alpha found that the game didn't recognise the throttle. Hopefully that either already fixed or will be in the next build.

I still have the ancient 10 yearold X52 (not the pro) which is still just about clinging on to life (with countlessly increased dead zones to remove the ever increasing jitter) which will probably do in the meantime though.

I bought an X52 for this game, it does exactly the same with same layout as the pro version and couldn't justify the extra £40 for green lights instead of blue  Also bought into the second beta stage, will upgrade to the premium beta stage if its possible when it starts considering it includes the expansion pass. I think ive spent enough on one game tbh

The X52 is (more) prone to jitter than the X52 Pro, that's probably the biggest difference between them, so you're more likely going to need to adjust the dead zones to keep the throttle and stick stable. Having said that, after nearly 10 years of vigorous use, I haven't had to increase the dead zones too drastically.

However, I have never been able to get the mouse nipple to work properly; it permanently drags the mouse cursor to the right of the screen. I basically have to either disable the mouse nip entirely, or give it such a large dead zone that it basically doesn't work.

The Saitek site also appears to have stopped supporting the original 52, so getting drivers can be a bit of a pain, especially for Windows 8 - you can have to install the driver set in compatibility mode for it to work properly.
