I agree the DC is awesome, allows me to take a confort break and not have to log-off or quirm while I dock.

DO NOT fit one on a Clipper, it's very bugged and you'll just spin around the slot for 10mins, on the T9 it's a joy though.

hehe funny the first time I tried the DC was when I got my new Clipper - it seemed a good fit for a luxurious vessel - the first 10 docks were fine no problem, cigars and brandy relaxation time to some blue danube, then one time it looked like it would be fine then smashed me into the super structure so hard and WOULD NOT STOP! Brandy and cigars everywhere! Quickly sold off soon after!

Docking Computer override?

I have read it before but forgot what I read, and did a search but got a Gazillion hits......

So tell me again, how do you override the DC? I put one in my trading Python and although it seems to work well, it does make some strange maneuvers. I just wanna know how to turn Hal off. LOL

Just advance your throttle past 0, turns it off immediately

increase throttle to immediately stop the auto dock.. switching off the docking computer in "modules" will stop it functioning.

If you want to turn it off quickly just throttle up.

If you're nose on to the space station though, you can turn it off in the modules section RH UI panel (or throttle up in reverse).

*Edit - Damn ninjas are everywhere now :D

When the docking computer gets cornfused by blasting into the mail slot at >300 and being assigned Pad 1, I just quickly advance the throttle to a positive value then back to zero and all's (usually) well.

Cool, thanks guys. I knew it was a throttle command but I couldn't remember if it was up or down or maybe even "X". Now I know it's throttle up as you are crashing into the wall!

YEEEEEEEHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LMAO!

Docking computer trying to kill me

So a few nights ago, I lazily let the docking computer take control of my ASP while I am still 6klms from the station and switch to another window to browse, when it decides the ship coming towards me does not exist and can be ignored. I turn around just in time to see the collision. Instantly my hull is down to 27%, the other ship is toast, and I am now Wanted.

Manage to escape despite the authority vessels homing in and taking my hull down to about 4%, dock somewhere else and get fixed up.

About an hour later almost exactly the same thing happens again, except this time I don't escape and eat a re-buy (also losing the cargo of gold, damn it).

So now that two of the systems I was making a nice trade profit in are hostile, I move off to new grounds and resort to taking my ship inside the stations before letting the docking computer land me. All is going good for a couple of hours, and then all of a sudden the damn thing goes nuts and crashes me into another ship again, causing it to spin off into the wall and explode. Yet an other 6600 bounty and wanted status.

I think my docking computer has gained sentience and has decided to kill me for my dismal piloting abilities.

Have A Laugh industries make the docking computer which might explain it.

Looks like you might want to start practicing manual docking. ;)

The trick that works well for me is I have keys bound for left, right, and down thrust. (I have the other directions too but those aren't relevant to docking)

Hover roughly over your pad, gently down-thrust until the landing graphic pops up and starts beeping. Then use left-right thrust to center your ship, and tap down-thrust to gently descend until it latches in. If you've got shields like most sane people you can rush it a bit more, let the shields absorb the rough landing.

Oh, and as a rule of thumb, point the ship's nose at the numbers/control tower or follow the stacked arrows in the landing graphic. It won't latch in if you land backwards.

A bit of practice will free up that internal slot for something more useful, and apparently save you thousands in bounties. :D

Hmm I use the docking computer all the time, I request permission to dock and go grab a drink or have a smoke or whatever 1000's of times. I did come back once nose to nose to a type 9 that was stuck in the space station entry window and it was promptly fined then blasted out of the window with me nose to nose with it and I didn't lose any shields or take nay damage so I just kind of assumed that when the docking computer was active I was "in god mode" for that short while. I also had the docking computer nose first me into the landing pad of a couple outposts a few times and both cases I suffered no shield or hull damage. Nose first at a pretty good clip, fast enough that I thought I was toast but the docking computer just righted the ship and proceeded to dock.

I want your docking computer please. :)

I am playing private group, if that makes any difference, but have many times taken damage while auto docking. It even says the docking computer may crash you in the description.

It helps if you always extend your landing gear before allowing the docking computer to take over. This can be inside the station or outside, as you prefer. What this does is prevent the computer from boosting. I've made this my standard procedure, and have never seen the computer retract the landing gear.

Damn it now the Computer's gonna learn to retract em' landing gear to ensure your death!

As a pilot who has been trained how to use autopilot systems, you made the first big number one mistake of piloting a ship: you didn't keep an active lookout and you didn't monitor the autopilot!

The first thing you do when flying a ship is FLY THE SHIP. Even if you're using an automated system, you're still the captain in charge. If you see another ship, turn off that and avoid it yourself because I don't trust my life to that computer. You deserve to be wanted for killing another human with your negligence and failure to control your vessel.

In all seriousness though, the main thing I don't like about the docking computer is the inability to disengage it at a moment's notice. If I want control the only thing I can do is increase throttle which may not be the best solution. All docking computers should be sold with a disclaimer "Warning: Use at your own risk! Never allow the computer to dock unattended and always keep a lookout for danger when in use! Bugs are to be expected and we are not responsible for your 300 million credit ship!"

meh if It costs me a rebuy it will still have been worth it for the 70000 hours it has saved me :p
P.S. I am alt tabbed out typing this while the docking computer is docking me. I have 100% trust in my equipment. But then again I don't buy from those shady Li Young Rui discount stations shops either.

Well I say that until I actually have to rebuy, of course then it will be a totally different story. I will be whining and complaining right here on the forums!

No way, the boost is half the reason I use the DC it get's me in the dock faster than I can and at least the docking computer is flying my ship sober, I can not guarantee the same :p
