Thanks for the condescension. Please feel free to ignore all my future comments and suggestions on the beta forums.

The comment wasn't aimed at you. It was a general response to what I see as a general view on this thread. That's all.

Docking computer

Does anyone else get that awful noise when they take over from the docking computer. It's like the music goes all weird and it stays like it until you leave the system.

Would you like a computer to fly you from A > B too?

Isnt that the point of an autopilot of any type? ;)

While I'm normally a fan of the 'I dont need LESS to do in a game' argument. In this case I dont see a more involved autopilot (beta issues aside) causing too much of a problem.

It wont stop me hands on flying, just allows me a little more lattitude. (and I might sneak a few kills from other distracted pilots haha)

Didnt seem to detract from I-War 2's gameplay, or Eve, Freelancer, X.

I like the idea of the most complex autopilot that can be thought up.
Auto-hover, auto-stop-relative, auto-fly-to-nav-waypoint, etc..
Any spaceship with ranging scanners and a nav computer with a bit of AI should be able to drop you off somewhere, park itself, then pick you up when the pub closes.

The docking computer on the C64 worked flawlessly every time. Can't you disassemble the binary and copy the code from there? :)

I know you're kidding, however....

The C64 autopilot had an easier job to do. All it had to do was align with the axis of rotation and fly up to a docking slot which had no billboards / protusions sticking out. It also made absolutely no attempt to handle avoiding collisions if other ships appeared.

Funnily enough, the AP in ED does a perfectly good job of getting you to the docking slot if you engage it far enough away. But that's where things go wrong :)

I'll be honest here, I'm not a fan of the current incarnation of the docking computer. I find it slow and annoying and it was sold after two tries. (I'll admit I may prefer it when I get a larger ship)

With all the work it takes once you jump to a new system and then make your way to station. I just find it redundant. Personally I think I would prefer you to be able to engage the docking computer once you hit a new system. Docking comp would then framedrive you to station, line up and dock.

When I've been interdicted I've always been able to framedrive out in everything up to hauler before any combat could occur. So if i got lazy and autopiloted from star it gives piracy a chance. It also means the docking computer may be more efficient since it could (hopefully) navigate framedrive without overshooting or crawling.

In actuality, the docking computer as it functions in this beta is actually AT LEAST as good as the one in the original Elite game. So if you want to compare it to the "world" in which we play, it wouldn't be strange for it to act as it does.

I imagine, since Elite is based on real motion calculations, that they have made it as it is because it is a speed-up of how a docking computer WOULD actually be able to function. I find that very likely. In the real world it might be 10 times slower.

One might - as an addition to the different types of docking computers - imagine that you could buy improvement circuits that, for example, increased their effectiveness?

Docking computer manual override

I was in my lakon 9 coming in under docking computer control when I had to take manual control to avoid a collision with an AI lakon 9.

10/10 to the audio team for the change in music! Try it, let the computer fly you through the slot take manual control and listen!

i'll have to give that a try, usually if i have to interrupt the DC i'm swearing too loudly to hear any change ;)

The Docking computer can work good , i seen it

Ok , last night i enter a station on auto dock , normaly it does the space hibbyjibby then go towards the landing bay on a roll yaw that makes you sick coz the screen keeps on jittering from the hunderds of unnessacary adjustments.

But hence back to the story , when i got inside there where 3 ship's launching from their pads and my docking computer noticed it and thought Hmmmmmm let's speed up a few things and did the most amazing docking i've seen so far with a unjittered yaw roll.

one other thing , with the Lakon 9 the last part of the docking is so bad , i've had station managers come complaining to me coz the ship scrapped off all the paint on their landing docks.

Just now i had my docking computer trying to land on the pad , UPside Down
ofc my shields where not up to the task when the docking computer tried to do a barrel roll on the pad while being upside down and resulted in structual damage to my ship and the station manager came over to report to me that the landing pad was totaly wrecked and had to be replaced.

also on the lakon 9 the docking computer does the landing gear to late , so i get warnings from lucy that the landing gear ain't down..

thats all for now

Greets Sixer

I'm pretty sure Lucy does the check for docking gear about 20secs before she gives the warning.

I'm forever getting the warning even though my gear is down.
